POTON GIGI

At the heart of Balinese culture lies an ancient ritual known as Potong Gigi, the Tooth Cutting Ceremony. Rooted in local traditions, this practice represents a significant rite of passage for young Balinese individuals.

Potong Gigi is a solemn and meaningful event that marks the transition from childhood to adulthood. It is celebrated with joy and festivities by the local community, symbolizing the journey towards maturity and responsibility.

During the ritual, the young person is escorted by a priest to the temple, where the ceremony takes place. There, seated before the gods and ancestors, the young individual prepares to undergo the tooth cutting, a symbolic act that signifies the end of childhood and the beginning of a new chapter in their life.

With great skill and precision, the priest cuts a small fragment of the young person's tooth, invoking the blessings of the gods for their future. This gesture represents the separation from the past and the acceptance of the responsibilities that come with adulthood.

After the ritual, the young person is congratulated and celebrated by family and the community, a sign of support and encouragement for their journey into adulthood. Potong Gigi remains a precious and memorable moment in the life of every Balinese individual, an indelible memory of their culture and roots.
